Bankrupt nation
published: Thursday | April 22, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

UNLIKE THE election campaigns they ran, where they positioned themselves as the common man, walking the walk and talking the talk, Dr. Davies and company have seemingly made a strategic move to 'talk over the heads' of these same people during the current budget debate.

Using financial jargon, they reel-off expenditures and revenue projections knowing full well that very few people comprehend their antics. They do this knowing that Jamaica's current situation, likened to any corporation or individual, is unsustainable.

Regardless of income level, any person or company that borrows 46% of their income to sustain daily living or operation would be considered a major financial risk by creditors. In fact in the United States, that individual or corporation would have to file Chapter 11 (bankruptcy).

As far as I'm concerned, Dr. Davies could have levelled with the Jamaican people by stating, "my fellow Jamaican, our beloved nation is bankrupt!"

I am, etc.,
