THE EDITOR, Sir:
MR. TONY Laing, the host of Laing & company a popular radio programme on Power 106, declares ad nauseam that we are all shareholders and directors of Jamaica. While I will readily admit that by birth we are all shareholders and our lives are intricately woven into the very fabric of our country, I beg to differ with the view that we are all directors. To imply directorship seems to suggest that every Jamaican is involved in the process of formulating policies and strategies in how the country is governed, which incidentally are his views.
However, my recollection is that under our present system of government the constitution specifically prescribes that the cabinet retains this right as the principal policy making body in the country. These policies and strategies are then debated by the rest of our elected representatives before they are implemented. To suggest that we are all directors seems to me to imply that each person is involved in this process which is a fallacy.
Those to whom a privilege is given to educate and inform others have skewed fiction and presented it as fact. It is no wonder why thousands of Jamaicans are so readily selling their shares (i.e. their hope in the future viability of our country) below market value and are migrating en masse in an effort to mitigate their losses in our bankrupt country.
