Slayers to meet Urban Knights
published: Saturday | April 24, 2004

THIRD-SEEDED St. George's Slayers will meet fourth-seeded Urban Knights in the nightcap of a triple-header scheduled for the Stadium courts today beginning at 8:00 p.m.

Braves Chiefs will try to dismember Link Up All-Stars at 4:00 p.m. and West Cumberland Flames will be out to scorch Blazing Panthers at 6:00 p.m.

Slayers (12-7) have played one more game than Knights (12-6) and are on 31 points, one more than Knights.

Slayers have won seven of their past eight games to climb from eigth position. Rohan Robinson, Andre Wilson and Owain Hall have been carrying the Slayers which started out 2-3 to become legit title contenders.

Slayers coach Winston Harvey said that things aren't exactly where he would like them to be but that they have improved greatly since the start of the season. Harvey also said he is expecting a physically demanding game today and that his big men will have to respond to the challenge.

"It's going to be a tough game. Urban Knights are a physical team and a running team. They are bigger than we are so they might have the advantage on the boards," he said.

"We have to go back to basics and block out on the rebounds," he added. Urban Knights Andrei Grant and Roderick Ingram are their team's muscle and will provide a great battle in the post against the Slayers' Wilson and Robinson.

BATTLE

"The match-up should be competitive on both sides," said Knights coach Calvin Martin of the battle between the big men.

"The players from both sides are fairly good defensively and offensively so it should be a good game."

Both teams are good in the open court and will make the guard match-up interesting also. Martin said he believes Slayers backcourt combination of Owain Hall and Nicoy Cambell is "more experienced and offensive minded" than his duo of Lancelot Grandison and Linton Murray but he said whoever comes in the better frame of mind on that day will win the game.

"If Lance makes his first couple of shots and gets around eight points in the first quarter we'll be alright but if he doesn't, it's going to be a long night," Martin said of his point guard.

Harvey agreed with Martin's analysis of the guards saying: "It's an interesting match-up. The two which execute and show better leadership on the court will lead their team victory."
