Record points for Tivoli Gardens
published: Monday | April 26, 2004

By Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

WHEN TIVOLI Gardens ended demoted Seba's miserable run in the 2003/04 Premier League season with a 2-0 win at Railway Oval yesterday, Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey became the first coach in the history of the Premiership to guide a team to 70 or more points in a season.

Although he fielded a side that could be considered a second-string one, Bailey said "that was one of the incentives going into this game."

Fabian Malcolm scored a spectacular volley from inside the penalty box, a shot that gave goalkeeper Alrick Henry no chance and Darren Virtue made up for an ordinary first-half with an easy goal mouth tap in from Malcolm's cross in the 67th minute.

"We asked the guys to try and make the 70 mark and it is good to see the reserve players come to the fore and get the job done," an elated Bailey said after his team had gathered to offer prayers of thanksgiving.

Meanwhile, Reno held Rivoli to a 1-1 draw at Prison Oval. Gregory Tape was on the scoresheet for Rivoli and Reno got their goal from Kirk Wright. The result means Rivoli end the season on 51 points in sixth place whereas Reno finish fourth from bottom with 33 points.

At Railway Oval, Bailey said his only disappointment was not scoring enough goals. Malcolm narrowly missed out on a second goal when his 77th minute shot from a rebound hit the crossbar.

Seba got their chance to score at least one goal. Their best opportunity came in the 75th minute when Norman Foster made a gallant run down the left side, beat two defender and then presented Lushane Brent-Harris with a gift. However, the rugged striker went for power, resulting in his effort soaring over the head of advancing goalie Edsel Scott.
