Man sentenced for molestation
published: Wednesday | April 28, 2004

A FATHER of five children who sexually molested and impregnated a 12-year-old was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment at hard labour.

A Home Circuit Court jury had convicted Robert Patrick Miller, 48, salesman, of 483 Summit Avenue, Claremont Heights, St. Catherine, last week of the carnal abuse of the 12-year-old girl. Sentencing was put off until yesterday.

Justice Ingrid Mangatal, in sentencing Miller, told him that his eldest child was much older than the girl he molested.

Although DNA tests conducted on the foetus proved that Miller was the father, he denied having any sexual contact with the girl.

EVEDENCE LED BY THE CROWN

The Crown, represented by Grace Henry, Crown Counsel, led evidence at the in camera trial that Miller was a friend of the girl's aunt. He visited the home at times where the girl lived with her mother and grandmother.

During December 2002, Miller went to the home when the complainant and her two young cousins were there, and committed the offence. The girl's relative discovered that the girl was sexually molested when she got pregnant. DNA tests were conducted on the foetus to prove paternity and the results indicated that Miller was the father.

In his defence, Miller denied going to the house during the period when the girl got pregnant or of sexually molesting her.
