THE EDITOR, Sir:
THIS COUNTRY has apparently gone completely mad and is plunged into an era of total decadence.
I don't know why we are all so surprised at the sexual promiscuity of our youth, when they are constantly bombarded by sexual images daily in the print, electronic and audio-visual media. They watch programmes like 'Girls Gone Wild' and 'Spring Break' on cable, and imitate the behaviour displayed at these festivities.
In true Jamaican style, they try to outdo the people they see on the television screen. Yesterday both The Gleaner and The Star showed offensive 'favourite' pictures of patrons at 'Passa Passa' and 'Bacchanal' carnival. One had a young woman lying spread-eagled on a car bonnet and another with a woman gyrating on a man's groin, as if this type of conduct is something commendable. Almost every dancehall song they listen to describes the sex act in the most vulgar fashion, yet these are the artistes who are given the most airplay and earn the most money.
The old adage still rings true 'Children live what they learn'. It's time for the powers that be, namely the politicians, business moguls and the media, to encourage our children to adopt some good old fashioned principles by endorsing activities that promote wholesome values.
I am, etc.,
KAREN HENRY
