PATRICK MCINTOSH, former managing director of the West Indies Alumina Company (WINDALCO), has been appointed president of the state-owned Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC).
Transport and Works Minister Robert Pickersgill confirmed the appointment in a release issued by his office Tuesday.
According to the release, the appointment of Mr. McIntosh was done on the "recommendation of the JUTC's chairman, Noel Hylton". Mr. McIntosh replaces Sterling Soares who resigned from the post in April last year, citing intentions to pursue business interests. Mr. Soares had served as president of the bus company for three years.
MAN OF EXPERIENCE
The appointment, the Transport Ministry said, was in keeping with a study conducted by a team of Swedish consultants who made several recommendations geared towards the improvement of the six-year old company which has been operating at a loss since its inception.
"With his experience working in a multinational environment, Mr. McIntosh is expected to use this expertise to steer the company into a positive direction," Transport Ministry said.
On acceptance of his appointment, Mr. McIntosh has reportedly given his undertaking to utilise the full human resource potential of the company, which employs over 2,000 persons, to make a success story.
A qualified mechanical engineer, Mr. McIntosh is currently the chairman of the Toll Authority, the entity established by Government to monitor toll operations on Highway 2000. His appointment becomes effective on Saturday, May 1.
