The Gov't's half payment fiasco
published: Friday | April 30, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WAS made aware that recently salaries were paid to persons in half and half and that nurses and some teachers did not receive their salaries on time.

Of recent times there has been the real and present threat of non-payment of salaries for work done within the Government sectors. I notice that during the late payments and half-payments fiasco, the Minister of Finance did not make a public announcement to the nation, thus alerting utility companies that they are not going to be paid this month either or their payments were to be late.

What I think is most cruel in the attitude of this Government, is the wanton disadvantage it takes of our people's resilience and patience. If it's against all laws to sell drugs and steal, then when you are to be paid your salary, pay it and in full. No one is concerned about the mismanagement of funds by ministers, they had better cut their own fat and deal with it without affecting the public. They made the mess, they should clean it up.

I notice that the Aristides and other Haitian refugees have been hosted to the tune of millions of dollars and the Government claims it is at no expense to the public. I am awaiting mutters from the Government later in the year, saying they never expected it to run into this, that or the other amount and so it is going to cost the public, we are sorry with no resignation in train.

I am, etc.,

J.M. FLETCHER
