Saddened by court's ruling
published: Friday | April 30, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I REFER to an article captioned 'Unions have no say in layoffs' which appeared in Monday, April 19 publication of The Gleaner. I am saddened by the court's ruling in that the workers will be at the mercy of management.

The ruling handed down by the law lords will have far-reaching consequences for the unions in particular, and the employees in general.

The Younis proposal and now the court's ruling are signs that every effort is being made to erode the influence of the trade union movement in the country. The implementation of the historic MoU is substantial evidence of the significance of collaboration and dialogue.

It is a matter of calculated urgency that the Confederation of Trade Unions challenge the ruling. The ruling is a potentially dangerous situation.

I am, etc.,

NEVILLE ATKINSON, J.P.
