THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE MOTOR Repairers' Association of Jamaica are up in arms with Parish Councils for their tardiness in addressing the problem of roadside garages; or is it because these roadside mechanics are decreasing their profit margins. This is not peculiar to Jamaica. It is worldwide and among all trades and professions.
Even though they are breaking the law, they are an asset, not only to car owners, but to the Government, as their monies circulate in buying parts for service, and providing a livelihood for their families.
Let's face it, more of these so-called illicit garages will continue to operate and flourish regardless of strict rules and regulations; as long as legal garages continue to gouge their customers with exorbitant and ridiculously high repair costs.
These side road mechanics, could teach garage owners, a thing or two about courtesy, doing the job well and keeping the customer. The Government would be discriminating against these garages. Do-it-yourself garages should be introduced, within the guidelines of the law. Mechanics should be licensed and graded according to their skill; and regulated, and so create a happy medium for everyone in the trade. Mechanics are not grease monkeys, but highly qualified, trained and skilled technicians, an asset to every person.
