INFERNO ON FIRE - Young DJ wins Heineken Tour top prize
published: Monday | May 3, 2004

By Teino Evans, Staff Reporter

The three finalists - DJ Kevin, DJ Inferno and DJ Rohan - square off at the final of the 'Heineken Green Synergy DJ Tour' competition held at Mas Camp Village on Oxford Road on Saturday.

THE 'HEINEKEN Green Synergy DJ Tour' competition reached an exciting climax at the Mas Camp Village on Oxford Road, New Kingston, last Saturday night, when DJ Inferno walked away with more than $600,000 worth of sound equipment and a one-year internship at FAME FM among other prizes.

The three finalists DJs Inferno, Kevin and Rohan all had two rounds of 25 minutes each to prove their worth, as they gave patrons an array of musical mixes from all eras and genres.

DJ Rohan, in his final set, gave patrons a taste of hip hop, reggae and hardcore dancehall, as he spun tunes like Usher's Yeah, Richie Spice's Earth A Run Red and a wicked mix between Elephant Man's Pon Di River and Dancehall Nice Again.

Second-place winner DJ Kevin in his final set had the crowd going, as he received a couple of 'forwards' for his efforts. Kevin kicked things off with tunes like Sizzla's All Is Well, Kartel's Real Bad Man and Elephant Man's Blasé, before wandering off into a mix of hip hop tunes from the likes of Missy Elliot, Redman and Busta Rhymes.

INFERNO SETS FANS 'ABLAZE'

Crowd favourite, DJ Inferno, however, lived up to the expectations of his fans, as he added much energy and animated hand movements to his set on stage. He spun tunes like Assassin's We A Di Roughest and the remix of Yeah by Usher, Lil' Jon and the East Side Boyz to a re-make of a hip hop rhythm. His creativity and skills on the turntables definitely made an impression on the crowd, as there were screams of 'DJ Inferno' as he played.

Speaking with DJ Inferno, he admitted to being nervous at first, but according to the amateur DJ, "The nervousness went away as I got more into the spinning." Inferno says, overall, he was happy to be a part of the experience and was pleased with his overall performance throughout the competition. "I think my performances were good and people really enjoyed themselves and that's what it's all about," he said.

Special guest selectors, DJ Clue of MTV and Eminem's DJ, Green Lantern, were also on hand to show their support. According to DJ Green Lantern, "It's good to see such a big crowd turn out to see young kids (DJs) up and coming, because we don't see this in this States," he said, as not many persons are interested in supporting amateur DJ's. Green Lantern, in encouraging the young DJs, said that they should "be original, do something different that nobody else is doing and do it to death."

After the winners were announced, patrons were entertained with some live performances from host Wayne Marshall, Bounty Killer and Jaguar, while the Renaissance crew and guest DJ's controlled the remainder of the early morning.
