Motorcyle unit for fire service

THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE FIRE Department needs to be innovative. Having paid close attention to the plight of the fire service over the years, I think the principals need to start looking at solutions rather than just complaining. If I recall, the fire service is plagued with prank calls resulting in excessive gas bills and high maintenance cost for fire units.
I am suggesting that each station be equipped with a motorcycle unit. This unit will be the first to respond to calls and should be able to advise the fire truck to: a) return to base if it's a hoax; (b) request back-up if necessary based on size of fire; (c) ascertain if there is any hydrant in the area; (d) request the dispatch of water trucks from the Rapid Response Unit if deemed necessary.
The cost of maintaining a motorcycle is minimal compared to a fire unit. The motorcycle would significantly minimise the distance travelled in response to prank calls as the unit would be able to return to base without having to travel to far places unnecessarily.
I am, etc.,
