New hotels a bad idea
published: Monday | May 3, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I RECENTLY read about the grand plans to build new hotels in the Trelawny area. I don't think that this is a good idea. If it was, the major hotel chains would be expanding their product offerings and following suit. This is not the case, so why are public funds being used to build these hotels?

Outsourcing of call centres and information technology support services are major sources of income for many small countries. This is an area of growth. Building more hotels in an already over-saturated market seems ridiculous.

The Government should take these funds and improve the technology infrastructure of the country and go after this outsourcing money. If you have a great product or service people will pay a premium. Ask Sean Paul and Elephant Man and I'm sure they'll agree.

I am, etc.,
