Carnival or street dance?
published: Wednesday | May 5, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

JAMAICA CARNIVAL 2004 was a huge success, according to Supreme Ventures. I say it was a huge street party. Let's not do it again next year. Let's go back to the glory days of carnival. The days of elaborate costumes. Let's have a soca song contest. Have a road march king and queen. A junior prince and princess.

Bring back the Junior Carnival. Now is the time to start planning for Carnival 2005. To get more people involved in carnival, there should be a schools section where each school will enter the carnival with costumes designed by students. This could be for junior carnival and kiddie carnival.

Both will have almost a year to design costumes. Also we can have corporate sections, where each company can motivate employees to design and enter the costumes competition. By doing it this way, the cost of costumes will be local and affordable.

Encourage overseas groups to do the same thing. Carnival this year saw less people. Because of last year many people lost interest and will continue to do unless this event is revived. Chukka Cove as usual was a success but carnival is more than Chukka Cove.

Organise affordable fetes for the people that support carnival the most the "downtown" crowd. I would like to say thanks to Supreme Ventures for their effort. Anyway, we can do better!

I am, etc.,
