We need better roads, running water now

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I HAD the privilege to grow up in a community called Newport, one which is located approximately seven miles from Highgate, St. Mary. Although it has fascinating landscape, clean flowing rivers and a happy group of people who are genuinely nice, the condition of the 'roads' and other infrastructure is appalling! This is a result of neglect of the so-called leaders/politicians.
We, the citizens, have taken the situation in hand and have grabbed spade, machete, axe and all that is necessary to transform the track we call a 'road' but there has to be a time when we draw a line and start demanding what is lawfully ours. How long will we have to wait before anyone hears our pleas? Is it that we speak a different tongue? Or is it that politicians only start acting when people start to burn buildings, vandalise business places or become a nuisance to society?
I/we refuse to stoop to that level; we were brought up in a different way, the way in which, when we want something we say please! And when we receive it, we say 'Thank you.' Hence, we are asking nicely, you need to start fixing the roads, give us running water, invest in human resources and illustrate some respect for our people. We fancy results, and any pledge that you plan to make will not work this time, as we have exceeded the gullibility phase years now, and the only person we intend waiting on is God himself.
I am, etc.,
