Give teachers some credit
published: Thursday | May 6, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I HAVE observed with dismay the scant regard given to our nation's teachers. Many critics have suggested that students' poor performance is to be blamed solely on teachers. There is no mention of the students' need to study more and focus on assignments given. I am not saying that all teachers are performing well but surely the majority are trying hard to educate our children. Can we give them some credit please?

It is very challenging to deal with some young people today. Some are insolent, daring and disrespectful. Can you imagine then some of the difficulties teachers face daily?

Some teachers are sometimes reduced to tears when the burden gets too heavy, especially when children hurl insults at them. In cases like these most of them are not even remorseful. Instead, they brag about how they 'dis up a teacha'. There is little respect shown to teachers these days. This is very disheartening when one considers the many sacrifices most of them make.

I think we need to support our teachers more. Let us show them that we care and appreciate their role in society.

I am, etc.,
