JCDC Popular song competition entries cut to 36
published: Friday | May 7, 2004

THE JAMAICA Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) popular song competition moved into its second phase recently, with the trimming of the over 100 entrants to 36.

Between April 29 and Wednesday this week, several million dollar hopefuls were eliminated during two semi-final showdowns held at the Louise Bennett Garden Theatre in St. Andrew.

The list of performers remaining ranges from already established names like Anthony B, Sugar Slick and the Innocent Crew to virtually unknowns in the business.

On Wednesday evening, several of those who did not make it to the first semi-final contest squared off before the specially arranged panel of judges.

Reflecting the move by the commission to focus on what is popular, the performers did tracks which addressed themes from love to crime to 'bling bling' culture to Jamaica's beauty.

According to the commission, the results of the semi-finals will be tabulated and the final 10 will be known by this Tuesday. The 10 will go on to shoot music videos and go on to road shows as they vie for the million dollar bounty.
