THE EDITOR, Sir:
JUST BY chance, on May 1, I found myself in a group participating in a most unique undertaking walking around the island. It's the second time this task is being undertaken, and the group is once again led by Prof. Lawson Douglas. The primary aim is to raise funds for the Kidney Support Foundation. The journey is broken into a number of legs, each done on the first Saturday morning of the month. At the end of the main walk, a ceremonial mile is completed, at which time members of the local community participate in an effort to raise funds.
As luck would have it, I joined the team for the 'Sav'-to-Negril leg, which is one of the longest legs. Among the group of about a dozen walkers were a noted professor (as mentioned), a former Chief of Staff of the JDF, and a senator. A motley bunch, you will agree, and all of different degrees of fitness. The challenge of the task, together with the diverse personalities and backgrounds, made the ordeal much more bearable. After walking the 16 miles from Sav to Negril, we were hosted by Rondell Village, where we were treated to an ackee and saltfish breakfast on the beach.
Hopefully, on June 5 when we're in Lucea, businesses and civil society will be better represented. By the way, if you want to participate in the ceremonial mile, or make a public or private donation to the Kidney Support Foundation, call Jean Rhone at 967-8341. See you there.
I am, etc.,
