Cultivators benefiting from tractor training programme
published: Saturday | May 8, 2004

ELEVEN FARMERS are being trained in tractor operation and basic mechanics through a special programme being conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture's Agricultural Support Services Project (ASSP) in collaboration with the Ebony Park HEART Academy.

The training programme was recently launched at a ceremony at the Ebony Park HEART Academy in Toll Gate, Clarendon.

At the end of training, successful participants will be certified by the National Council on Technical Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) and licensed through the Island Traffic Authority.

Ruth Simpson, Agribusiness Development Officer at the ASSP told participants attending the launching ceremony that the training project would assist farmers to operate more efficiently.

"Our farming has been mainly a manual affair but now, the farmers will benefit through the use of tractors and equipment to assist with land preparation," she said.

And David Palmer, Agriculture Instructor at the HEART Trust/NTA, in his remarks, said the programme would involve training in routine tractor maintenance and servicing, selecting tillage equipment and pre-starting inspection.
