HEAD OF the St. Catherine North Criminal Investigative Branch (CIB), Deputy Superintendent Bertram Lee, said the police are now working on "a number of strong leads" to conclude their investigations into Thursday night's brutal killing of a 57-year-old farmer and his teenage son in Hill Run, St. Catherine. The victims have been identified as Bertram Morgan and his 19-year-old son Omar. Reports are that the son was shot at least twice in the head, while the father was shot four times - in the head, chest and right hand.
According to the police, about 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, the Morgans were travelling in a Lada motor car, when on reaching intersection of Pepper Pot Drive in Hill Run, Spanish Town, they were ambushed by a group of heavily armed gunmen, along the dark road.
DISCOVERED
The bodies of men were not discovered until early yesterday morning.
The windscreen of the vehicle they were travelling in was shattered by the gunmen's bullets.
Persons who visited the murder scene said the body of the younger Morgan was discovered slumped across the steering wheel, with two bullet holes in the forehead, while the father's body was found on the ground, outside of the vehicle.
"We are working on some very strong leads, but there is not much we can say at this time," Mr. Lee told The Gleaner yesterday.
Further allegations are that the elder Morgan's death might be linked to his association with a particular group located in the troubled communities of Spanish Town.
And speaking to the level of crime in the Spanish Town area, DSP Lee stressed that the fear of crime in the commercial district is now at a low level, but noted that the police were still experiencing problems in some communities.
Earlier this year, the city erupted into a major disturbance which at one stage resulted in the death of 12 persons within a week.
Meanwhile, up to yesterday members of the Special Anti-Crime Task Force (SACTF) were maintaining a strong presence at the Spanish Town bus park, which rival gangs are said to be fighting over.
