Ex-national footballer on drug charges
published: Friday | May 14, 2004

WESTERN BUREAU:

ANOTHER WELL-KNOWN Montego Bay resident, who the police say is wanted by the law in the United States on drug-related charges, was taken into custody in the western city yesterday afternoon in an operation involving local and overseas narcotics agents.

In custody is former national footballer Christopher Gibbs, 33, fisherman, of White-house, Montego Bay. The police say the narcotics agents held him at a service station in Ironshore.

The arrest of Gibbs, who captained Rusea's School to the 1989 daCosta Cup football title, and was subsequently appointed captain of the National Under-23 team, brings to five the number of Montego Bay residents who have been picked up by narcotics agents since March.

Senior Supt. Carl Williams, head of the Police Narcotics Division, said the police had taken Gibbs into custody, but declined to give details of the allegations in the extradition warrant on which he is being held. "We are not talking about it at this time as we are doing some work right now. Not before tomorrow (Friday)," SSP Williams told The Gleaner.

Narcotics agents have been active in Montego Bay since March 2, when they arrested Leebert Ramcharan and Donovan 'Plucky' Williams on extradition warrants at the request of the U.S. Government.
