Roads bought and paid for
published: Friday | May 14, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I am writing to endorse Mr. Alan Foreman's position "Robbing Peter to Pay Paul". Most other places in the world where there are toll roads, these roads offer convenient alternatives that sometimes run parallel to the toll road so that people who have to get to their destinations, still are able to access alternate roads.

What makes the situation even worse with the Portmore toll road is that we Jamaicans have already paid for that road over the years. This is not a totally new road being built by the concessionaires, justifying their charging the rates they intend on charging. The government, in the interest of the almost 500,000 residents of Portmore, should do whatever is necessary, to revamp the plans so that people will not be required to pay toll on the leg of the highways between Kingston and Portmore...It has already been bought and paid for.

I am etc.,
