Movies without meaning
published: Friday | May 14, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I recently had the opportunity to watch two Jamaican movies. The movies entitled "Shottas" and "Rude Boy". The Jamaican Don is nothing but inspiration for our youngsters to use guns and drugs. It is not sufficient that the DJs make lyrical tunes about it, they had to give a pictorial view. I am not saying that we should not expose the bad things in Jamaica and one might say I am contradicting myself, however it would be more meaningful and encouraging if a good lesson was learned from a bad habit.

When I read about the local film industry earning money from films shot in Jamaica, I had to wonder how much money did those movies earn. Our DJs should not be selling themselves short just to make money, they should be teaching the youths values and morals. Instead people like Beenie Man, Spragga Benz, Kymani Marley and much more are selling their so-called "acting skills" for big bucks. In my opinion these movies are boring, negative, and have no story line.

I am no director or producer but these movies are nowhere near professionalism. Personally I would never pay to go see these movies if they were in the theatre. All those who think money is the only thing that can help Jamaica are obviously dreaming. The painful truth is that the dreamers are the entertainers, actors and those people who young children look to for guidance. In my opinion their solution to every problem is money. This habit is so old and we need to change it.

I am etc.,
