A protocol for ministers
published: Sunday | May 16, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THIS LETTER should be about kudos to The Gleaner's photographer Rudolph Brown for capturing a tender moment between two of my favourite persons namely, Jamaica's money magnate and Minister of Labour and Sports.

However, this letter is to query whether there is not a protocol advisor to instruct the Minister in matters of protocol or official code of conduct.

For a stateswoman, a polite nod or a handshake would be quite in order, if she is a personal friend of the person whom she greets, then she may embrace and if she is emotionally charged to take it a step further, then a kiss on the cheek or jaw would be permissible but it seems that a lip to lip kiss is going a bit beyond the boundary.

Poor Michael was taken off guard and could only comply spontaneously.

I have no blame for the Minister. I can only say, come on protocol advisor, you are falling down on the job.

I am, etc.,

E. WILLIAMS
