FORMER JAMAICA Under-15 batsman Yanick Elliott scored an unbeaten century for leaders Melbourne who are in a commanding position against Westmoreland entering today's final day of their fifth round Supreme Ventures/Super Cup encounter at Melbourne Oval.
In scoring his first century at this level, 107 not out, Elliott shared in two important partnerships, 77, for the first wicket with Dillon Ebanks (27) and 125 for the second with Donovan Pagon who contributed 67 as Melbourne took first innings honours.
With these, along with an unbroken 58 for the third wicket with Marlon Samuels, 28 not out, Melbourne, replied strongly to Westmoreland's 189 and were 260 for two at stumps.
When Melbourne started their reply, Elliott, a student at Norman Manley High School, and Ebanks looked to have things under control until the latter ran himself out at 77 for one.
His dismissal brought to the crease Pagon and the pair played some fine shots on the way to securing a first innings lead for Melbourne.
However, trying to play across the line, Pagon was trapped in front by Dwayne Ewart.
When Samuels reached the crease, Melbourne had things all their way but Elliott began to wobble in the 'nervous nineties'.
He was put down twice - the most embarrassing for Westmoreland was when he skied a ball right into the hands of Andre Andrews, who probably celebrate too early and in the process floored an easy catch at mid-wicket - this giving the batsman two runs and his landmark century.
Elliott, who reached his century in two hours and 38 minutes in which he hit 14 fours off 131 balls, was also put down on 104 and 105.
Earlier, Westmoreland continued to find the going tough against good bowling as only 16-year-old Zaniffe Fowler, 59 (10x4), and Dwayne Ewart, 37, who put on 73 for the second wicket, made worthwhile contributions. Samuels ended with five for 34 with support from Nikita Miller (2-45) and Roman Hutchinson (2-44).
AT NELSON OVAL: Former Jamaica Youth batsman Chadwick Walton scored a century, 105, to put Lucas in a good position for first innings honours over St. Catherine.
Gary Herbine, 47, supported Walton as West Indies pacer Jermaine Lawson 4-54 and Tamar Lambert 3-35 took the most wickets. St. Catherine were 125 for five at stumps - Lambert 39 not out and Dean Morgan, 37, have so far top scored. Omar Burke 3-33 and Delroy Morgan 2-45 are the wicket takers.
AT GOODYEAR OVAL: Manchester are in a good position for first innings points against Boys' Town. Boys' Town made 204 with Duran White, 45, Oneil Wier, 39, and Omar Campbell, 30, scoring most runs against Donovan Sinclair (3-80), Stephen Patterson (3-20) and David Powell (2-23).
In reply, Manchester reached 108 without loss - Gary Graham, 76, and Lancelott Warren, 24, are the not out batsmen.
AT ALPART: Sion Jackson, 64, and Nicholas Austin, 59, scored half centuries for Kingston as the Tigers reached 274. St. Elizabeth closed on 20 without loss. West Indies pacer Jerome Taylor (3-34), Alton Beckford (3-38) and Howard Powell (3-59) took the most wickets for St. Elizabeth.
AT KENSINGTON OVAL: JDF were also in a strong position for first innings points over Kensington. Maurice Kepple, 59 not out, and Wavel Hinds, 41, top scored in Kensington's 203 against Anthony Folkes (5-45) and Mark Gray (4-73).
