Jamalco expansion
published: Tuesday | May 18, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I would like to use this medium to call on the Minister of Development and the Minister of Finance to put in place Skill Training programmes to provide the required skill workers for the Jamalco expansion. Jamalco will require over 2,000 skilled workers to work on the expansion.

The most recent expansion at Jamalco, required 700 skilled workers and 400 workers came from abroad. We cannot allow this to happen in this expansion. I hope the Government and the people of Jamaica are serious about not allowing this to happen again.

I am recommending to the Government to provide 20 training centres in Clarendon to train at least 50 persons at each centre in the skills required for the expansion. HEART should be able to provide another 500 skilled workers and we would be well on our way to ensuring that the people of Jamaica get the available jobs. The young people in the community of Hayes and surrounding communities are ready for the training. I am appealing to the Government "please do not disappoint the young people ". Provide the funds, the economy will benefit, the people will benefit and at the end of the day, everybody will be happy.

I am etc.,

BENJAMIN BEALE

Hayes P.O.
