Held by police without cause
published: Friday | May 21, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

CHRISTOPHER GIBBS, who was taken into custody on Thursday, May 13, 2004 by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, was released on May 19, 2004 without being charged for any offence. Senior Superintendent Williams of the Narcotics Division had informed Mr. Gibbs' attorney Jacqueline Samuels-Brown that contrary to reports carried in the media, Mr. Gibbs was not taken into custody relative to any extradition request by the United States of America. The police further informed Mr. Gibbs' attorney that they were carrying on investigations which when completed Mr. Gibbs would either be charged or released. Mr. Gibbs is now home with his family.

Mr. Gibbs states that he was extremely surprised when he was arrested by the police on Thursday, May 13, 2004 and taken from Montego Bay to mangroves along a beach in Trelawny and from there to the Narcotics Headquarters in Kingston.

He was kept at the Horizon Remand Centre and complains that he was photographed three times; twice at Narcotics Headquarters and once at the Remand Centre. Mr. Gibbs, who has several complaints about his treatment while in custody, denies any wrongdoing.

I am, etc.,

JACQUELINE

SAMUELS-BROWN

Attorney-at-Law
