Repay your student loans
published: Friday | May 21, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ in the paper dated May 17, 2004, 'NCU head wants SLB recipients to be bonded.' I think it is a good idea. Many students upon completion of their studies opt to migrate for better paid jobs. This allows them to repay their loan within the six years.

If students are bonded without the option of migration it would be fair to treat the bonding as a scholarship; for example, students that receive three years loan may be bonded for three years. However, I am not sure what he meant by students 'ought not to be totally funded.'. Many students depend on the SLB to afford them tertiary education. With part-funding they may be able to start, but discontinue due to lack of financial resources.

I therefore believe that
students should have the choice between bonded to the Govern-ment and migrating to repay loan. Delinquent students should be tracked using whatever means available, in order to collect the pounds and US dollars.

I am, etc.,
