DUE TO a technicality in its competition policy, COURTS Jamaica Limited has been ordered by the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BLGC) to hand over more than $500,000 in prizes to a customer whose winnings were withheld because she is related to an employee.
"The Commission has ruled that the winner should be given the prize because the term 'immediate family' was never defined," said Derek Peart, the Commission's executive director. He added that COURTS was honouring the Commission's ruling by making arrangements to deliver the prizes to the winner.
COURTS' customers can win up to $5 million in the Gold Rush competition, which prohibits employees' relatives from entering. However, more than a month ago, a Montego Bay shopper had her prizes withheld because it was discovered she was related to an employee.
Neither the company nor the BGLC revealed the nature of the relationship or the exact amount of money involved.
