published: Saturday | May 22, 2004

FORMER WORLD Junior champion Veronica Campbell was in sizzling form at last weekend's South Eastern Conference (SEC) Championships in Mississippi where she copped the women's sprint double, which made her The Gleaner's Top Performer of the Week.

In capturing the sprint double, Campbell, a former national champion, helped University of Arkansas to first position with 183 points ahead of Florida, 120, Georgia, 115, Tennessee, 108, and LSU, 93.

Campbell, who did extremely well indoors earlier this year, showed she was in top form, racing to a world-leading 22.41 seconds over the 200 metres and 11.12 in the 100m, the eighth fastest in the world this year.

On both occasions, Campbell had LSU's Muna Lee behind her (100m - 11.25 and 200m - 22.98).

Campbell, the 2002 Commonwealth Games 100 metres silver medallist had earlier run 11.10, the fourth fastest time in the world this year behind Americans Lauryn Williams (11.01), Marion Jones (11.04) and Torri Edwards (11.05).

Jamaica's Sherone Simpson (11.11) is also among the best, listed at fifth.

The 200m time pushed her ahead of Williams (22.46), LaTasha Colander (22.50) and Edwards (22.66) and local-based Vere Technical schoolgirl Simone Facey (22.71).

A former Carifta and CAC junior champion, Campbell was also apart of Arkansas' 4x100m team which finished second in 44.09 behind LSU who clocked (43.15).
