AS PART of efforts to improve the aesthetics of roadways across the island, the Ministry of Transport and Works, in association with the National Works Agency (NWA), yesterday launched its 'Tree-mendous Beautification Adopt-A-Road-way Project'.
The initiative, which is the result of a government/private sector partnership, has received sponsorship from the Jamaica National Real Estate Company, a subsidiary of the Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS); the National Com-mercial Bank (NCB); Guardian Life Ltd.; Life of Jamaica (LoJ) and the Jamaica Mortgage Bank. Each company will pay $200,000 monthly towards the maintenance of the first phase of the project along Trafalgar Road, New Kingston.
In addition, LoJ announced that it will be assuming the costs for the development of a sculpture park at the corner of Trafalgar Road and Nelson Way. The park will feature two statues, a rockery, benches and a single walkway complemented by a variety of flowering and non-flowering plants.
PRIVATE SECTOR COMMENDED
Robert Pickersgill, the Minister of Transport and Works, in delivering the main address at the ceremony held on Trafalgar Road, commended the private sector companies which have supported the project and described the gesture as "one more example of the commitment of civic-minded Jamaicans, in partnership with the Government, to making our country a cleaner and more beautiful one."
Kingston's Mayor Desmond McKenzie also extended his commendations. "This programme seeks to encourage organisations, corporate citizens and other civic-minded enterprises to adopt sections of roadways, beautifying and maintaining them over a lease period of five years," he said.
The transformation of Trafalgar Road is expected to be completed in about four weeks, the Minister said.
