Beating regression
published: Wednesday | May 26, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

EVEN WITHIN the average school system of my suburban community in America, where each homeowner has to pay five thousand dollars annually for school taxes, it takes a co-operative effort of families and teachers to design an effective educational curriculum.

If we look at the educational system of the United States of America, those schools that have achieved passing marks have a strong Parent Teachers Association (PTA), and those with failing grades have very Poor PTAs. The PTA helps to supplement financial resources where the educational budget falls short by having paid social affairs such as concerts, athletic events, bottle drive and car washes.

I have seen this done in Jamaica 25 years ago for the Harbour View football team for much needed financial resources. I believe with a collective community approach we can beat this regression in our educational standards.

I am, etc.,
