Code for politicians
published: Thursday | May 27, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

MINISTER PHILLIPS' repentance regarding his attendance at Willie Haggart's funeral is rather belated, but still to be welcomed. Can we now hear from Minister Davies, Mr. Seaga and Mr. Chuck on this matter?

Is it possible that, for once, both major political parties could close ranks on this issue by endorsing a very specifically worded code of conduct where dons are concerned? For certainly it is one thing to issue such a statement in the plush surroundings of Gordon House but may be quite another to adhere to when visiting one's constituency.

Maybe a code of conduct with harsh penalties could help in this regard. In the interest of the future of the next generation I plead for quick and definitive action in this regard by both major political parties.

I am, etc.
