Crime units useless - Smith
published: Friday | May 28, 2004

OPPOSITION SPOKESMAN on National Security Derrick Smith has expressed hope that the announced anti-kidnapping unit will serve its purpose in the light of what he suggested were a host of failed anti-crime initiatives over the 15-year life of the People's National Party (PNP) government.

"Most of these have turned out to be nothing more than a smoke screen aimed at appeasing a terrified public. No sooner had the smoke cleared than the guns continued to bark," Mr. Smith told the House of Representatives on Wednesday while making his contribution to the Sectoral Debate.

He added: "The knee-jerk reaction of the Government each time there is a public outcry or some form of social upheaval that rocks a section of the country is becoming quite predictable."

Mr. Smith argued that the Government still does not have a firm grasp of the national crime problem.
