New way of settling disputes
published: Monday | May 31, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

LATELY IT has come to my attention that school children have now found a new way of settling disputes, or in other words taking the law into their own hands. It is extremely sad to hear how these students are killing each other.

I have also noticed that the behaviour of the school children tends to resemble that of adults, which is evident in how they conduct themselves. I remember one Monday I took a bus from Papine and the bus stopped to pick up some school children, and because some of them did not want to pay their bus fare (which is $15 when you are in your uniform) the bus had to end up at the Matlidas Corner Police Station.

You should have seen their behaviour on the bus. One student who did not want to come off the bus had to be forced off by two police officers.

It is extremely sad to see that the youth of today are involved in a lot of the criminal activities taking place. This leaves me to wonder if the parents are playing a key role in their children's lives, by spending enough time to teach their children the right values? Or is it just that the children know better but are just being influenced by their peers?

I am, etc.,
