Financial woes holding me back
published: Wednesday | June 2, 2004
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WOULD like to exemplify a problem encountered by Jamaicans (international students), who are studying outside their country of birth. This problem involves the lack of financial aid, whether school-based, state-based, or federal.
I am on the verge of completing my associate's degree in mathematics. I have been accepted to all five schools to which I have applied. I plan to matriculate to the Georgia Institute of Technology to study architecture in August. The tuition for this institution is about US$30,000, and I do not know how I will fund my education.
I lost both my parents some years ago, and I currently have a brother who is studying at the tertiary level. I am currently on the Dean's List, and the only obstacle preventing me from achieving my educational goals is my lack of funding. I am just hoping that someone who reads this article could muster a solution to assist 'us' Jamaican students, and international students as a whole, in financing our future.
I do hope this problem can be reviewed and rectified as soon as possible. Thanking you in advance for your co-operation.
I am, etc.,
