TEN COMMUNITIES, many of them inner-city neighbourhoods, are to benefit from a campaign which intends to beautify these areas and provide 'green spaces' by improving or developing recreational parks.
The campaign is being made possible by the Waste Management Association, which is made up of contractors in Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine.
"The aim is to uplift the communities and to help educate people about waste management in the area," association treasurer, Marjorie McKain, said last week.
The communities to be targeted include Papine, Duhaney Park, Waterhouse, Olympic Gardens, Franklyn Town, Dunkirk, Molynes Gardens, Kencot, Southside and Tivoli Gardens.
The association started with beautification and clean-up activities in Tavares Gardens, south St. Andrew, on Labour Day but Ms. McKain said that activities in the other 10 communities would start later this month.
In Tavares Gardens, the association, which donated equipment and received over $200,000 in cash and kind from various sponsors for the project, implemented plans which included fencing sections of Tavares Gardens, installing park benches and putting in plants, netball and basketball areas and a playground for children.
