Angels threaten Hydel's reign
published: Saturday | June 5, 2004

OUR LADY of the Angels is threatening Hydel's hopes of a three-peat in the annual Inter-Prep Schools track and field championships. The school from Molynes Road, Kingston ended yesterday's first day of the annual two-day meet at the National Stadium with a three point lead over Hydel, located at Ferry in St. Catherine.

After six finals, Our Lady of the Angels were out front on 38.5 points. Hydel came next with 35.5, followed by Mona (29.5), Quest (25.5) and Ardenne with 19.5. Vaz Prep, who won the championships eight year in a row from 1992 to 2000, are lingering in sixth place with 11.5 points.

Our Lady of the Angels' charge was led by Shuraffadean Thomas who took the Class 2 girls double. Thomas won the high jump and the long jump. She leaped to 4.15m in the long jump, beating Hydel's Zania Scott (4.07m) and T'Phannie Hall (4.02m) of Mavisville into second and third place respectively. She then returned to capture the high jump, soaring to 1.31m. Jodeen Williams of Wolmers' and Tasha-Kalye Leslie of Quest who both jumped 1.21m were the silver and bronze medal winners.

In the boys' events, Hydel took gold and bronze in the class 1 high jump. Kemar Lewis (1.56m) won the event ahead of Ramone Bailey (1.51m) of Quest and teammate Sean Meikles (1.46m).

Today's final day may be a record breaking one. With 27 finals to be completed, all eyes should be set on Vaz Prep's talented 12 year-old sprinter Andre Pickersgill who ran a blistering 58.0 in winning his 400m heat.
