Don't let a jewel go to waste
published: Sunday | June 6, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PEOPLE FROM different walks of life around the world are crazy about Jamaica and so should be the Jamaicans who live in this our beautiful island paradise of wood and water. Let us not allow negativity such as crime, violence and other statistics to degrade and deprive us of our identity as the jewel of the Caribbean.

Jamaica already accounts for many ills in the number of murders, crime rate, drug-related issues and HIV/AIDS among other things. The question is, do you want to be a part of those statistics or do you want to try and make a change in the statistics? You can categorise where you fall but at the end of the day we need to continue making Jamaica the little island paradise nestled in the Caribbean sea, where some of the world's greatest citizens reside.

Here where I live in Norway people are crazy about Jamaica and would love to visit the place they have heard so much about. The white sand beaches, the cuisine, the music, sports, the historic sites, and most of all the people, Bob Marley, Sean Paul, the bobsled team, the national football team, the track and field teams, just to name a few. I am proud to be Jamaican and regardless of our status or socio-economic background we should be proud of our country, heritage and forefathers for the work they have done to make our country what it is today.

Let us continue as a nation to make Jamaica proud by doing our part in whatever positive way we can.

I am, etc.,

KEVIN FRANCIS
