Hydel complete Inter-Prep hat-trick
published: Sunday | June 6, 2004

HYDEL YESTERDAY romped to their third consecutive win in the Inter-Prep School track and field Championships held at the National Stadium.

The Ferry school amassed a mammoth 291 points on their way to the three-peat, beating fellow top five finishers Vaz (192), Mona (104) Wolmer's (97) and Quest (96).

Three records fell during the two-day meet. Jhuvon Francis of Covenant erased the Class One boys' long jump mark of 5.14m set by Vaz's Tarik Bachelor in 2001. Francis leaped 5.38m while Jason Williams of Kings' Gate jumped 5.24m for the silver. Jerome Wilson of Mavisville (5.06m) took the bronze.

IN THE RECORD BOOKS

Vaz's Amanda Quest also put her name in the record books with a 12.46 clocking in the Class Three girls 80m dash. Quest took a 100th of a second off Shaniel Stephenson's 12.47 mark. Shanyce Anderson of Suthermere (12.52) ran on for the silver while Abbigain Nelson (12.59) of Hydel won the bronze.

Hydel were not to be left out of the record-breaking fray. Their Class One 4x100m girls lowered the old mark of 52.95 set in 2001 to 52.53. Mona (53.35) ran on for second and Vaz (53.76) were third.

In the boys' Class One 400m, Vaz's Andre Pickersgill ran a blistering 58.39 seconds for the gold. However he came up short of the 58.14 record mark. Francis of Covenant, who was declared the Class One champion boy, ran on for the silver in 1:00.18 while Andrew Binghawn (1:00.44) of Lannaman's was third.

In the 300m dash for Class One girls, Wolmer's Justine Deacon (44.69) won the gold medal ahead of Lori-Ann Foster (45.01) of Mona while Rochelle Anderson (45.33) of Hydel was third.

Hydel captured the gold medal in the girls 4x200m relay, clocking 1:51.24. Mona (1:52.58) and Vaz (1:53.12) ran on for the silver and bronze.

However, Vaz turned the tables in the day's final event, the 4x200m Open relay, posting a time of 1:48.00. This was some consolation for the school that won the title eight years in a row, as victory in the relay ensured they were not beaten by more than 99 points.

Quest (1:49.00) won the silver in that event and Hydel (1:51.00) copped the bronze.
