Where are the children?
published: Saturday | June 12, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHERE ARE the children? Where are the joyful noise and the playful cries? Where are the 'pleases' and the 'thank yous'? Where are the 'you're welcomes' and the 'I'm sorrys'? Are the children locked down in the ghettos, afraid to come out because of the persistent, aggressive firing of the gun? Or are they isolated in their massive bedrooms with their toys and playstations? Are they restricted by their guardians from church and play? Or are they locked up around the books and in libraries? Are the motorists taking away their precious lives?

Do they love school, their 'own' homes, or do they have legitimate reasons to run and hide? Are they out in the cold harsh streets seeking their next meal from business people, whose main focus is their own career and success? Or are they used as slaves, forced to parade their bodies before evil, lustful men? Are criminal elements taking them away and using them as drug containers?

Wherever they are Jamaica, let us take some time and pray for them. Parents and guardians, suffer not the children to go to Jesus, for He truly loves them, and has a plan and a future for all of them. All of us who mistreat children will have to pay, in this life or the next. Let us love our children because they love us, and there is no proof of the contrary. Their smile warms the heart. And where are they? I believe they are in the arms of the Almighty King of the universe who splits justice equally through love.

I am, etc.,
