Pricing POs out of business
published: Monday | June 14, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

EVERY BUSINESSMAN knows that if they want additional revenue, they reduce prices to attract more customers.

The postal service must realise that by constantly increasing their prices, customers must go elsewhere. And they wonder why large companies use courier services to send mail!

I suppose they are going to be surprised by an immediate drop in sales of postage stamps, as soon as the new horrendous charges come into effect. It is no surprise that all businesses having to send out mail, statements, contracts, etc., use other more efficient and cost-effective methods.

Private individuals will revert to e-mail, fax or telephone calls, or like us retired old folks, just stop writing letters to family and friends.

On an NIS pension of $750 per week, I cannot afford a $60 stamp to write to say that 'I love you' to someone abroad.

No doubt companies like JPS or Cable and Wireless will install a small facsimile box in each customer's home or office through which they can send their itemised bill and through which we can insert a debit card, punch in the amount and pay the bill electronically.

The post offices are pricing themselves out of business.

I am, etc.,
