Get rid of human hazards
published: Monday | June 14, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I AM left to wonder, whether the street people in Mandeville do not constitute a part of the 2004 Labour Day theme - 'Road Safety First, Avoid The Worst'.

With this in mind, the authorities should assume this as a Labour Day project and remove them from off the street to a place of safety for care and protection.

They are really road hazards, as they move senselessly across the busy streets soliciting money from motorists.

In addition, there are two men in particular, who have a ferocious appearance, because most of the times, they walk around with a club and iron pipe and tend to be abusive if their requests are not met.

Are we going to wait until possibly, they attack someone, especially school children?

We can also see the health risk because they are scantily attired and their garments are extremely dirty.

There is the Ebenezer Home for the street people in the parish but it is my opinion that the citizens are not aware of this facility and its functions.

Therefore, I would suggest that the management of the home sensitise the citizens through the electronic and print media and other means on this available facility.

I am, etc.,

E.N. PERKINS
