St. Thomas neglected
published: Wednesday | June 16, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IF JAMAICA is to move forward we expect that this forward movement will involve the entire island. Every notable development taking place in Jamaica in the last 30 years has occurred in communities located between Negril Point and Harbour View roundabout. Communities between Harbour View roundabout and Morant Point have been left to fend for themselves. This seems to be a planned development scheme.

Over the last 35 years the main economic pillars of St. Thomas have all disappeared. It started with the death of the coconut industry. I am convinced that the aerial spraying assisted in killing the coconut trees. Hundreds of jobs were lost. Then there was the closing down of Serge Island Sugar Factory and the decline of the sugar industry. St. Thomas was among the biggest suppliers of sugar cane and was therefore seriously affected economically and with the heavy loss of jobs. Bowden Harbour is one of the best natural harbours in the world, accommodating the largest of ships and is well protected. I implore our decision makers to considering using this harbour to push for the development of St. Thomas.

Yallahs Fording was destroyed two years ago. A Bailey Bridge installed to ease the island eastern traffic flow was washed away six months after installation. Up to now, the permanent bridge promised has not even started.

Remove the Yallahs Fording completely and allow the water to flow freely to the sea. Start the bridge, and train the river. Erect box culverts at the Bull Bay Fordings to lift the road above the water. During this time divert traffic through the hills. We are prepared to suffer to allow this development to take place and it is long past the time!

I am, etc.,

KEITH JAMES
