Casinos overdue
published: Wednesday | June 16, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

CASINO GAMBLING is overdue in Jamaica. We need the revenue badly and the jobs. Those who opposed casino gambling because of the crime have a right to be concerned, but ask yourself, isn't the crime here already? Now let's have some jobs with the crime! That stretch of land between the Kingston airport and the drive-in theatre would be perfect for an Atlantic City-style boardwalk with casino hotels. People can just fly in, gamble and then fly right out.

There could also be a six-flag type theme park in the area. The Gunboat Beach area is also prime for this time of development.

The Government erred in giving away the lotto franchise. Jamaica is probably the only country in the world that has given away its lottery to private business. This revenue is badly needed by Government. The revenue could be used to support education and guarantee a place in school for every child in Jamaica. Education is a right, not a privilege.

It is time to give the lotto to the people of Jamaica and not to private enterprise. It is just plain dumb to give away such revenue!

I am etc.,
