JLP councillor reports 'death threat' to cops
published: Wednesday | June 16, 2004

By Omar Anderson, Gleaner Writer

BENNY WHITE, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Councillor for the Fellowship Division in East Portland, has reported a threat on his life, as the vote-buying scandal continues to rock the Opposition party.

Superintendent Elbert Nelson, head of the Portland Division, confirmed yesterday that Mr. White had given him a written statement last Friday, which the lawman says "lacks some of the basic ingredients to become a threat."

"What is construed to be a threat by the councillor is receiving the necessary attention from the police," Supt. Nelson told The Gleaner.

Contacted Monday, Mr. White said he reported the matter to the police following a telephone conversation with Daryl Vaz, who was the campaign manager and chairman of the fund-raising committee of current Area Council Two deputy leader James Robertson, who defeated Olivia 'Babsy' Grange in the deputy leadership race last year.

White said the conversation with Vaz occurred while he (White) was at the Portland Parish Council last week. The Councillor added that he has also reported the matter to the police Special Branch.
