Goshen All-Age wins safety competition
published: Wednesday | June 16, 2004

GOSHEN ALL-AGE School in St. Elizabeth has been awarded the George Hendricks Trophy for the best safety performance this year among 32 primary and all-age schools located in Alpart's operating areas in Manchester and St. Elizabeth.

Goshen led second-placed Albion Primary and third-placed Alligator Pond Primary in a competition sponsored by Alpart and the Alpart Mining venture designed to promote safety in schools.

Goshen took home the Hendricks Trophy, as well as the Ray Gendron Trophy, for the best performance by a St. Elizabeth school, while Albion Primary received the Miller Trophy for being the leading Manchester school,

MOTIVATION PROGRAMME

The awards were made last Friday at the annual Alpart Schools' Safety Exhibition staged at the Alpart Sports Club.

The exhibition is the culmination of a comprehensive safety motivation programme conducted each year by Alpart employees at the participating schools.

Points tallied to determine the annual awards are based on evaluation of the schools' performance during the year as well as standard of the displays presented at the exhibition.

Chief judge at the exhibition, Dennis Hendricks, had high praise for the displays which, he said, "presented a graphic demonstration of the values and practice of safety in schools and reflected high levels of professionalism and safety awareness."

General managers of Alpart and the Alpart Mining Venture, Darrel Harriman and Glen Lynagh, also toured the exhibition and congratulated the students and teachers on the interest and focus on safety being maintained in the schools.

The theme of this year's programme was 'Conflict Resolu-tion', with the students utilising art, craft, literature, skits, posters, computers and video presentations to dramatise their presentations.

The Alpart programme, introduced in 1990, impacts on more than 20,000 children each year and won a World Safety Council exemplary programme award in 1992.
