Midfield changes coming
published: Wednesday | June 16, 2004

By Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR Carl Brown says there will be changes to Jamaica's midfield form in their upcoming CONCACAF return-leg World Cup clash against Haiti at the National Stadium this Sunday.

"It is going to be a different composition from what we had there," Brown said of changes from the first leg match in Miami last Saturday.

"That will afford the strikers some more opportunities at goal," he added of what he expects of the changes, following the Reggae Boyz' training exercise at the Prison Oval yesterday.

After Saturday's game, Brown stated that his midfield, which is comprised of Micah Hyde, Fabian Davis and Ricardo Gardner, did not afford enough striking opportunities to the forwards.

"They were not supplying the strikers which is true but basically if you look at the composition of the midfield there really were workers inside there.

"Apart from Ricardo Gardner who can do that (get the ball to the strikers), the other two were basically to soak up the pressure that we expected from the Haitians, which they did very well."

During yesterday's training, attacking midfielders Andrew Williams and Jermaine Johnson looked very good taking on defenders and passing the ball around.

Veteran midfielder Theordore Whitmore, who was a second half substitute on Saturday, went through a different workout, doing strength work with physical trainer Sean Samuels.

WHITMORE'S FITNESS

"It's definitely to try and get his condition up," Brown said about the special workout Whitmore got.

"You know he has not been playing for a little while. We have to do some extra work so that is what he was doing out there, trying to get his condition to a playable level."

Key players Ian Goodison, Gardner and Fabian Taylor watched from the sidelines while Ricardo Fuller was not in sight at yesterday evening's training session. In explaining their non-participation, Brown said he was advised by the physio to give them an extra day's rest.

There is still no replacement or drafted players from the injured men but Brown says this will only be done if an "emergency" arises.
