THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS ironic that a Government that has no funds to control the epidemic of rats in New Kingston, that cannot maintain its gullies and drains, that cannot repair its roads in rural areas, that cannot repair its police stations, among other things, can find the money to establish missions in South Africa and now in China and is now considering funds for five additional Members of Parliament.
If we must borrow money in order to survive, let us spend it on improving the infrastructure, on training that will improve the conditions of life for Jamaicans and so lead to greater productivity, not on the things that suit the interests of political parties or make a show in the world.
We are too poor to waste funds on that which does not really matter at this time. Our people need good roads highways are not for rural folks, opportunities for training, reduction of crime, employment and opportunities.
Real progress is not about presence on the world stage, SUVs, cell phones, mansions. It is about a people who are prepared to grasp opportunities and to work hard. The government should think about all this in their grand plans.
I am, etc.,
