THE EDITOR, Sir:
THE RISE in the global oil prices recently has raised many eyebrows, not only by the Government, but almost every individual living in this beloved land of ours.
It begs the question, why, as a nation, are we so reactionary? Haven't the oil crises of 1973, 1979 and 1981 taught us anything? I firmly believe that we need a National Energy Saving Policy. It should be defined in such a way that every individual knows the role they can play in the overall scheme.
Too often we are caught forming national committees who formulate grand proposals, but, as we are all aware, nothing is ever implemented. Conservation methods should be taught at the elementary levels so that our future generations develop the requisite culture.
Furthermore, the adult population has to be responsible in their use of energy resources. The fact is we cannot afford to continue to live these lavish lifestyles because our debt burden will continue to rise exponentially. Are we not concerned about our future generation?
I am humbly asking all Jamaicans to conserve on their energy consumption. Remember the nation's youth need a future that they can look towards.
I am, etc.,
